my ramblings:
hey friends! i have actually had a fair amount of new subscribers. shout out to
and his newsletter for all these new friends, so figured a quick intro is in order and give the new folks a run down of what i do and what torc.dev does as well. if you already know then just skip down to my recs:)so for the new folks, i have been in the talent/recruiting industry now for 13+ years at this point. i spent the majority of my career placing engineers across the US. i’ve placed close to 1000 engineers at this point in my career and have helped hundreds of engineering teams scale their departments. in 2020 i got super passionate about ‘loving on the 90%’ as i call it. typically recruiters can only place 10% of the people they meet, but i was always wanting to focus on helping the 90%. what i didn’t realize at the time is i could make a career out of it. i left the first company i was at for 11 years and then went to a startup in nashville and learned more about the in and outs of community. then i found my dream job at torc.dev where my main job is to make friends with technologists across the globe.
what is torc? it is a jobs plaform. some compare it to linkedin/indeed. however, every job we have is real and everything we do is super intentional. we are a good mix between a marketplace and a staffing company. we focus on the developer by being community first where you can jump into our discord get resume reviews, career coaching, and networking sessions. we also have a matching team internally that reaches out to the candidates who are a fit based on their profiles. if you want to join would love to have you. to be honest, in terms of our processes, i don’t see how we could deliver a better end-to-end product/experience for our customers and for the job seeker.
finally, this newsletter is just me documenting building the brand of torc.dev. thanks again for subscribing and following along for the journey!
my recommendations:
not a ton of new recs this week but i recently downloaded fabric im still trying to figure out how to use it but think of it as a single place to save those dang email gift cards you get for your bday, to parking directions you know you will need in 2 weeks for an event that someone texted you, to a fun tiktok you saw. it’s another ‘second brain’ app and while i used ‘mymind’ this one just is set up better. ill probably upgrade and get the email recaps so i dont miss anything and be able to dump voice notes. the AI search is actually pretty solid.
torc updates:
we are continuing to set records that torc.dev has never done before. here is a quick recap:
our signups for LATAM is ranging from 1500-1800/month and close to 70% of that who sign up complete their profile to where they can be considered for a job. mind you when i started we averaged 1500 a quarter. we were at 29% of profile completeness in december so we’ve 3x sign ups and 2x the amount of people completing their profiles.
we just threw our very first hackathon in partnership with a bunch of cool tech companies like datastax, langflow, twilio, digital ocean, and twelve labs. had over 125 folks show up! to get 125 folks to show up in nyc is a wild achievement lol
me and my team are actively building 3 customizable hiring pipelines with epic healthcare tech, workday, and guidewire. i have no idea what these things do but hey, people are people:)
our social media stats are through the roof after essentially not having any social media presence when i started at torc
we launched our merch store recently
we are launching a mentor/mentee program in july so be on the lookout for that
the stat i’m pretty pumped about is our efforts internally with email campaigns are really starting to pay off. out of 1M folks in the US on our platform, we have been able to get close to 49% of them activating their profile to be considered for jobs when we were at 31.9% in february of this year
marketing thoughts:
invest in your community. this section is more of a shout-out to torc than marketing hot takes (ill be back with those) but I truly think we are onto something special here at torc. i’ve never been apart of an org that truly puts job seekers first. i mean i get it. the hiring managers/clients are the ones that pay the bills, but i can’t tell you the amount of conversations i have had with engineering leaders and hiring managers that WANT to work with us because we invest so heavily in our community. with the amount of layoffs that are happening and individuals becoming more of a line item than a person, it’s my goal at torc for individuals throughout their career to be empowered and feel they are apart of something bigger then themselves. i have always said that i want to build something so special at torc that when someone gets laid off they know its going to be okay because they have the community at torc behind them. are we there yet? heck no. have we started? yes. and i can’t wait for the future of where we take this community and shout out to mike morris and dave messinger for seeing the vision in this.
