hey fam! we are sooooo back! this week we are highlighting the second video in my job search series ‘how to actually write you linkedin’. i’m going to link to the video because i did a lot of screen sharing on this episode, so you can cross-reference your linkedin with my stream (should have honestly linked to the video for the resume newsletter last week, but here we are).
if you hate reading, here is the tldr of this newsletter:
hot take: your linkedin is a summary of your resume
the words under your profile pic are incredibly important
if you do not have a good linkedin you will not be discovered online
here is the rest of the newsletter….
the banner thingy
use the very top of your linkedin as a way to invite people into your profile. make it fun. bring in something you enjoy and tie it into what you do now. e.g. ‘former chef turned data engineer.’ ive heard too many stories of people landing jobs because their banner made someone want to chat with them.
the ‘title portion’ thingy is so important
your headline follows your name everywhere. it should not be a generic title. it should explain what you do and the value you bring. keep it short and clear. focus the skills you have or want to learn e.g. 3+ year .net/react developer focused on genai roles. these are the words under your profile pic btw.
write a simple about section
the ‘about’ section won’t make or break you finding a job but it needs to contain enough technical skills and who you are and want you want to do. also it’s key to make sure you explain yourself in as little words as possible because no one clicks ‘see more’ on your profile.
clean up your experience
linkedin is not a resume. people skim. keep your experience short. explain what you did and what changed because of your work. use small impact bullets. do not copy long resume paragraphs. 3-5 bullet points suffice. basically put your most high impact bullets from your resume on your linkedin. your linkedin needs to make me want to ask you for your resume to further conversations.
use the featured section
the featured section is the most underused part of linkedin. add your best projects, writing, demos, or achievements. show the work you are proud of. this section will tell your story better than any list. i have some tools to track where people are viewing my content from and linkedin is always a top source. if you have good featured content on your linkedin it will allow the person viewing your profile to get to know you faster.
get a recommendation or five
idk about you but when i go try a new restaurant, i look at the google reviews. same thing, but it’s you and not food lol.
p.s. - i am always here to answer any job search questions you have. text me 615-235-5650. always here for you. and yes this is my number.
p.s.s - im trying to grow this newsletter to help others. if you feel like others should have access to this information, it would mean a lot if you share it!!
